This question is about turning pens. I am going to be buying a mini wood lathe hopefully tonight I just wanna make sure I know what I’m doing first, but I am not trying to turn just regular pens. I want to make Diamond Painting pens. Do you know anything about that what I need the same Size mandrel and what size should I use and are there any other tools that I will need for the lathe ?

When I lived in UK before we retired to USA, I used to make pens from recycled yogurt cartons..

Maybe some kind of deverter on the inside , to direct the air away from your work pieces.

It looks like when you glued the errant chunk in the first time, you pretty much only put CA on the wood. You didn't actually glue the chunk to the TUBE. I had a mesquite blank blow apart on me last week, so I feel your pain.

In April I gave my wife a Jr Great Palace Vine rollerball on white/gold trustone. She didn’t need such a nice pen but she wanted it and she’s worth it. Your talent never ceases to amaze me.

It looks to me like instead of shelling out that much money for a lower speed grinder that I could take a $100 20amp variac with a 0-130v variable output and plug my regular speed grinder into it, and then set the voltage to whatever it takes to reach the number of rpm's I'm going for. The motor shouldn't care as long as I don't give it more voltage than it's rated for. You can get an rpm reading app for your phone, then just play with the voltage until you have your regular speed grinder turning at the lower rpm's you desire.

If the cut off piece of the blank is big enough you can use it to make a cap out of it

I’m glad you made this video because I’ve been looking for a hobby knife like this because I build model planes and the exacto style knives don’t work for a left handed person like me. The problem with them is that the tightening device works loose as you use them. The knife you made tightens from the back end and should not loosen as you use it. I have turned a lot of pens in the past and have no problem making one. I will definitely order a few kits. Thanks again.

Love the hobby knife idea!! Would be nice to see a 3pc set in box, knife pen and pencil. Like a gift set or desk set . Could be good for a long form video to make the box or desk rest that matches!

Dang, that's a good looking turn. Those hobby knife kits are awesome.

Using your bench grinder, just reduce the diameter of the area past the drill fights to get chips out. I sometime reduced the O.D. and use only 2-3 X the drill diameter to drill with.

From what I've heard also, those Acrylic Stars and Stripes blanks from WoodCraft crack, melt, explode, and have all kinds of turning problems. I've heard very sharp tools and very light passes - kind of like you need on Inlace Acrylester blanks. I'm glad it turned out good for you. Made a really nice looking pen with that kit. - Dave
